History and Introduction of the Department of Social Studies Education
With the decision of the Executive Board of Higher Education dated 04.11.1997 and numbered 97.39.2761, the restructuring process was initiated in the Faculties of Education and within this framework, the Department of Social Studies Education was opened under the Department of Elementary Education of Fırat University Faculty of Education and started to admit students in 2001-2002 academic year. It gave its first graduates in 2005. With the change made in the 2016-2017 academic year, the Department of Social Studies Education continues its educational activities within the Department of Turkish and Social Sciences Education. While there were 2 faculty members in the first period of its establishment, today there are a total of 11 academic staff, including 8 faculty members, 1 lecturer and 2 research assistants. In addition, the Department of Social Studies Education has a master's and doctoral programme with/without thesis.
Aim of Social Studies Teacher Education Undergraduate Programme
To educate individuals who are sensitive to human, society and nature, who understand the place and importance of themselves and their profession in social development, who have gained competence and ethical responsibility in their profession, who perceive continuous development as a way of life, who have adopted scientific thinking, who are sensitive to public interests, who can make effective use of information and communication technologies, who can use Turkish effectively, who respect human rights, who are responsible, knowledgeable, creative and critical thinkers.
Vision
To train teachers who are sensitive to the problems of the country and the world and produce solutions, set goals for the future, have leadership and communication skills, can use communication and educational technologies, can establish a relationship between different disciplines and apply their knowledge to different fields, are sensitive to folk culture and art fields, perceive diversity as a richness, combine theory and practice, adopt the necessity of lifelong learning, are at peace with themselves and their environment, can think critically and express their thoughts in a civilised way, have a high level of self-confidence and tolerance.
Mission
Our main mission is to train teachers who will contribute to the development of our country, especially in the field of education, who are civilised, experts in their fields, who closely follow the developments in the field of education and training, who are idealistic, inquisitive and analytical, respectful to human values, self-confident, and to carry out joint projects with various national and international institutions and organisations in order to contribute to the professional development of students and to provide the necessary support to the teachers of our country.
